The Future is Artificial Intelligence!

What is intelligence?

According to Jack Copeland, who has written several books on AI, some of the most important factors of intelligence are:

  1. Generalized Learning- i.e. learning that enables the learner to be able to perform better in situations not previously experienced.
  2. Reasoning - to reason is to draw inferences appropriate to the situation at that point in time.
  3. Problem Solving- Given such and such data, find x.
  4. Perception- Analyzing a scanned environment and analyzing features and relationships between objects. Self-driving cars are an example like Tesla.
  5. Language Understanding- Understanding the language by following syntax and other rules known to the human brain.

Now, let’s solidify the concept of AI for you in a gist. Here are a few examples of AI.

  1. Machine Learning
  2. Computer Vision
  3. Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  4. Robotics
  5. Recognizing Patterns &
  6. Knowledge Management

There are different types AI in terms of approach. For example:

  • Strong AI Simulating the human brain by building systems that are designed to think and in the Process, give us an inside view of how the human brain           works. Strong AIs can do things as good as humans.

  • Weak AIA system that behaves like a human but does not give us an inside into how the human brain works. IBM’s Deep Blue, a Chess playing AI is a widely known example.

There’s a new middle ground between Strong AI and Weak AI. This is where the system is inspired by human reasoning but doesn’t have to stick to it. IBM’s Watson is an example. Like humans, it reads a lot of information, recognizes patterns and builds up evidence to say, “Hey! I am x % sure that this is the right answer to the question that you’ve asked me from the information I’ve read.

Now, let’s bring it all together in a recap.

AI is a machine or a computer program that learns how to do tasks that requires forms of intelligence that are otherwise, usually done by humans. Intelligence comes in many forms and many different aspects. And with further research, we will see AI take on many job roles and functionalities.
